What is 1500 Stories?

1500 Stories is a collaborative art and digital storytelling project about economic inequality in the U.S.  Rising economic and class inequality places the common good in increasing jeopardy. Currently in the U.S. the twenty richest people own more wealth than the bottom 50% of Americans combined. The goal of this project is to focus public attention on the chasm between the rich and poor in the U.S. through storytelling and the arts. It uses empathy and community building to mend the toxic and polarizing public discourse that the widening economic gap has produced.

The storygathering component of this project allows each participant to experience the intimacy that comes from bearing witness and being heard.  As an archive of community narratives, the 1500 Stories website will use those stories to humanize statistical data about economic inequality by putting faces and voices to those statistics.
